Recently
DETCO was contacted
by a California architecture company with a very unique
request. The company had received a contract to build an
extravagant mausoleum large enough for 2 very wealthy people.
The material to be used was titanium, the toughest, most
durable steel known to man.
Because of DETCOs
large, sophisticated equipment and expertise it received
the contract to machine and grind the doors and frames,
windows and frames, and attic grate, to be assembled into
the mausoleum, on site. The material was furnished by the
customer and DETCO manufactured
the parts in accordance with architectural and engineering
drawings. The door assembly alone was approximately 14
high x 10 wide and weighed over 8,000 lbs. Due to
the nature of the material, DETCO
spent many months machining and grinding the components.
DETCO personnel had
worked with small titanium parts in the past, but had no
experience with components of this size. The movement caused
by the density, toughness and hardness of this non-magnetic
material presented a difficult challenge to DETCO
and its tooling suppliers. After much trial and error,
the process was mastered and the parts were shipped via
two flatbed trucks across the country.
DETCO
now has the expertise of machining and grinding titanium
material and is confidentially searching for work in the
titanium field. However, DETCO
is not limited to mausoleum parts.
