Michigan Flame Hardening Company

MACHINE WAYS, BARS, RAILS, PALLET PLATES, ETC.

MICHIGAN has the capability of progressively flame hardening machine ways, bars, and rails up to 20 feet in length and up to 17 inches of adjoining surfaces (i.e. 4-sided machine ways) without soft areas or transition zones. MICHIGAN uses a state of the art liquid polymer injection system on all "straight line" work, i.e.: ways, bars, rails, pallet plates, etc, is used to effectively "soften" the quenching process and eliminate cracks and distortion. Most work calls for and receives .120" depth of case hardening. This case depth, however, can be selectively controlled from .060" to .180" depending on thickness, design, and material of the part being flame hardened. MICHIGAN has been hardening machine ways for 37 years. Since being acquired by Detroit Edge Tool Company, MICHIGAN has fine-tuned its methods of producing the desired consistent results with minimal defects and distortion.

ROLLS, ROLLERS, SHAFTS, TRUNIONS, ETC.

MICHIGAN can flame harden mill rolls, rollers, shafts, trunions, etc., from 1" diameter to 20" diameter, in lengths up to 18 feet and weights up to 4,000 pounds. Parts flame hardened on its lathe are quenched with the same liquid polymer system used in the "straight line" process for hardening ways.

GEARS, SPLINES, SHEAVES, ETC.

MICHIGAN is able to spin harden gears, splines, and sheaves up to 24" in diameter and 2" thick. Larger pieces can be hardened progressively.

STRAIGHTENING
All work is straightened to .015" T.I.R. typically. Upon request a straightening tolerance of .005" can be achieved. MICHIGAN’S straightening department includes presses ranging from 50 ton to 200-ton capacity. Aside from straightening, MICHIGAN is able to "de-twist" rails, bars, plates, and ways. Soft and flame-hardened steels and cast irons can be straightened, as well as non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and brass. Straightening service on a contract basis is also offered.

COST SAVING ADVANTAGES OF FLAME HARDENING

  • Higher surface hardness for longer life.
  • Reduced down time.
  • Lower maintenance costs.
  • Lower costs are applied only to the areas requiring hardening.
  • Less distortion.
  • Reduced machining and grinding.
  • Reduction in processing times.
  • Ability to harden parts too long for conventional furnace hardening.

MICHIGAN FLAME HARDENING CO. – YOUR SINGLE SOURCE FOR TOTAL METALWORKING REQUIREMENTS

MICHIGAN, being located in a DETCO facility, is in a unique situation among other flame hardening companies. Complete manufacturing services are offered with its flame hardening and straightening services. The wide range of machining and grinding services indicated in the earlier sections of this web site, offer an unusual opportunity for "one stop shopping". An un-interrupted flow with less handling is a definite advantage in securing quality parts on time. With the interaction of craftsmen and management personnel of the various disciplines, valuable time can be gained. The utilization of combined product and service knowledge is also a great advantage in producing quality parts in the most productive manner.
